My name is Brian Dent. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, I grew up in the small town of Ancaster. Creative interest are photography and painting.
Started wood carving in 1985 when I joined the Barrie Wood Carving Club.
I believe wood carving is a developmental art form and have been active in promoting my art through teaching and displaying my work at festivals, shows and galleries.
I have presented wood carving workshops at Georgian College in Barrie, ON, Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre in Midland ON, Grandview Inn in Huntsville, ON and the Askennonia Seniors Centre in Midland, ON.
My commitment to promoting wood carving led me to spend 10 years, from 1987 to 1996, organizing and co-ordinaiting the Canadian Wildlife Carving Competition held every September in conjunction with the annual Wye Marsh Environmental Celebration. In 1996 I started the Wye Marsh Association of Woodcarvers with the purpose of the group to carry on presenting the annual competition as a successful fund raiser for the centre.
For four years I was part of an artist residence series, with two years at Grandview Inn at Huntsville, Ontario and two years at Sherwood Inn in Port Carling, Ontario.
From 2006 to 2012, I volunteered at the Askennonia Seniors Centre in Midland, ON. Serving on the board as vice-president, convening the wood carving group, arranging and presenting wood carving seminars, donating carvings for raffles and material for seminars to help raise funds for the continued operation and success of the centre.
From January, 2014 to March, 2016 I was hired by Oro-Medonte Twp Recreation Department as a program instructor and presented a 10 week introduction to woodcarving workshops at Eady Community Hall, Oro-Medonte Twp. on Tuesday evenings 7:15 to 8:45.
After enjoying living in the heart of Ontario’s playground for 40 Years, I moved back to the Golden Horse Shoe in May, 2016.
I am currently living in Brantford.
Wood carving is one of my hobbies. An interest that has opened many new and unexpected doors for me to meet new challenges, new studies and many interesting people.
In 2023 I started exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence to create images of birds, animals, plants and landscapes.

I was pleased with the response to my creations and will be posting them online.

Hi Brian are you Still teaching
Hi Steve, Thank you for your inquiry. I am not planning any classes at this time. I do offer one on one instruction to anyone interested in learning woodcarving or help on a project they are working on.
Brian: I am a former resident of Brantford and have lived in Victoria, B.C., for the past 9 years. I was a member of the Brant Carving Club and I’m trying to locate any of the current members. Have you been in touch with anyone in this club. I understand they may still meet at the Beckett Senior’s Centre, Colborn Street, Brantford on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. If you have information as to how I might contact anyone from this club, I would appreciate you letting me know. Thanks, Wayne Vipond
Hi Wayne, I joined the Brant Carving Club last fall. You could contact Paul Partridge at pbpartridge13@gmail.com Wayne Burris is the president but does not have an email address. Hope this helps

Hi Pat,
It is nice of you to write. Very happy to hear from you. So many nice memories of growing up in Spring Valley. Feel we’re very fortunate to grow up there and feel secure in a very close knit community. Your mum and dad were very special and always showed interest and support in helping me develop my carving skills. Best wishes always. Brian
Hi Brian, I have been very fortunate to have had my Dad’s wood carving tools handed down to me. I am very interested in learning how to use them and was wondering if you could recommend someone in the Barrie area who may be running an introduction to wood carving course? I look forward to hearing from you. Judy
